Calcium and me?

“I’m strong to the finish cause I eat me Spinach!”

“Popeye,” the main character from the cartoon show “Popeye the sailor man,” would eat spinach to make him gain superhero strength. Sadly, that did not happen for me Popeye! I ended up with too much Calcium in my body! I take superhero strength for the gold please! You guys can keep your minerals!

This is supposed to be good for you? Right?

How can your body have too much Calcium? Before now, I have never experienced this issue Marbs! I am not even 35 yet, and my body is undoubtedly telling me that you are no longer 18, TJ! Someone is telling LIES! Surely, they don’t mean me when they say, “Ma’am!” Oh the kicker for me is “Mrs. Marbell!” Who is that? Please leave all the “Mrs.” to my mother-in-love! I find it so hard to believe that it is me; just call me TJ! Lol!

Calcium, a mineral, used by the body to help strengthen bones and teeth. Also, assist with muscle movement; meanwhile, helping our blood clot. Additionally, managing the brain and spinal cord function in the central nervous system. When we consume dairy products, leafy greens, oily fish, and vitamins, this vital mineral enters our body and gets to work! The question remains though, how can you have too much? I know what you are thinking, “I don’t even drink milk!”

C is for Calcium not cereal

Dry cereal, on the other hand, I eat like popcorn, maybe that is one factor to consider. Subsequently, how it is regulated in the body is where the issue comes in. The “too much calcium” is detected in our blood, which seems to be the first notification our body sends us to say, “Hey maybe you should take a closer look at this!” When I say the first sign is in your blood, to clarify it is discovered via a blood test. Like for an annual wellness visit or for any reason your doctor may be collecting blood tests or samples. Most likely those test could reveal high levels of Calcium.

The Science behind all of this

Our thyroid and parathyroid glands control the amount of Calcium our body absorbs for the before mentioned activities. Meanwhile, the excess or non- absorb amount is passed through the rest of the body and then excreted either through urine or a bowel movement. In some cases, those glands can expel more Calcium through the blood, resulting in high calcium levels.

Some cancers such as breast, lung, and kidney cancer also increase the calcium level in your blood aside from the food we eat. Our body is getting more Calcium in, than it is letting out. Drinking plenty of water and exercise can assist with getting rid of excess Calcium; some doctors may give you fluids through an IV to flush out unneeded minerals from the body. During my research, one article even suggests that too much Vitamin D in the body, in rare cases can result in increased calcium levels. What?

I see you!

Taking a look at my health and being a candidate for excessive Calcium. It can be very confusing if you eat healthy, only to realize that I am creating an excess mineral in my body! I want to be healthy! That’s all! Always listen to your body, and if you have a gut feeling something is not right, bring it up on your next doctor’s visit. Advocate for your health and peace of mind! Stay healthy, Marbys!
